This morning our Local Search Marketing team gave a presentation to Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce members titled "Lessons in Local – Leveraging Your Google Listing". In this presentation, we discussed how businesses can use their Google My Business listing to help reach local customers. Get highlights from our presentation so you can find out how to make the most of your Local Search presence.

Ensure Your Business Info is Complete
Google My Business Monthly Checklist
After your business is claimed and verified, it's necessary to take the time to fully complete the information in your Google My Business listing. The more complete and detailed your listing is, the most value it will provide to people conducting local searches and will result in better search visibility. Don't forget to complete the below areas of your listing, and get suggestions from Google on completing your listing:
  • Introduction: Write a detailed, optimized Introduction that accurately describes your business and its products or services.
  • Accurate Address, Phone Number & Website URL: All contact information must be included and must be up to date so it's easy for searchers to find and contact you.
  • Hours: When you include your business hours, they show up when users are searching on Google, making it easy for them to know whether or not your business is open.
  • Photos: Give people a glimpse into your business by uploading a few photos.
  • Category: Choose a category that accurately represents your business.
Encourage & Manage Reviews
According to a 2014 Local Consumer Review Study, 88% of participants have read reviews to determine the quality of a local business. Google My Business listings have a built in review function, so encourage clients or customers to share their experience by leaving a review. Once reviews start rolling in, be sure to stay on top of them by managing all reviews, both positive and negative.

Share Content
A convenient part about Google My Business Listings is that your Google+ page and local listing are in one place. Because of this, a good way to gain followers and engage visitors is by sharing content on your business’s Google+ page. Google also knows when you’re keeping your page active, so adding fresh content can help improve engagement and organic search visibility.

Take Advantage of Insights
Once your listing is verified, you'll see that there are Insights available in your Google My Business dashboard. The data provided, including views, clicks, new followers, phone calls and driving direction requests help give you a better understanding of how customers are interacting with your business.

Stay On Top Of Business Changes
Google's study, Understanding Consumers' Local Search Behavior, showed that consumers are using their smart phones more and more to conduct local searches. 54% are looking for business hours and 50% are looking for a store's address. This influx in right here, right now searches is why it's crucial to always keep your business details up to date online. Your information should be the same online as it is offline; any time that you change hours, your location or anything else, these changes should be made to your Google My Business listing.
